Queen Bess Creek: Silence

Silence is a rare commodity in today's world.  Wherever we are, it seems there is always the hum of some electronic device, the background drone of street traffic, and the chitter chatter of people living and doing and bustling about.

In my life, silence doesn't exist at all.  Which is why I really noticed the silence around me this afternoon.

It had been a rainy, cold and dreary day.  Tempers were short, and the girls were informed at various times throughout the afternoon that they should nap or at the least, rest quietly and without interacting with any sisters.

I will not question the mysterious and miraculous forces that somehow helped overcome the strong resistance that the girls put up for several hours.  For a sweet short while, they were all asleep -- Skye was last, succumbing only when Jamey stopped motoring, lay down with her in the cockpit and fell asleep himself.

There was no wind, there were no river noises, and there was nothing from the boat clanging.

I could not believe it.  I stepped outside, stood in it, and enjoyed it.  Silence.  What a beautiful sound.
